Annabel is an award-winning journalist who has been Global Travel Editor at The Independent since October 2023. Annabel joined The Independent in January 2022 as Associate Editor and has also held an Executive Editor title. She has lived and worked across the world, with long periods in India, Spain, Mexico and seven years in the USA based in New York. Annabel has a particular interest in exploring lesser-known regions and uncovering how travel can be a positive force for the communities she visits. Annabel won the Visit the USA Travel for Good award in 2026 for her article on the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States in South Carolina. She was also shortlisted for Travel Writer of the Year at the Press Awards in 2026 based on her coverage of tourism in Johannesburg’s Soweto and in the East Appalachian mountain towns of rural Kentucky. In 2026, she has reported from Greenland, eastern Finland, Poland and the southern States of America, as well Albania during the anti-government protests.
