Israel inició el jueves una campaña de vacunación contra el coronavirus adaptada a la variante altamente infecciosa ómicron, y las autoridades exhortaron a los grupos de mayor riesgo y los mayores de 65 años a recibir la inyección.

Israel fue el primero en el mundo en vacunar a su población a principios de 2021 y ahora es uno de los primeros en aplicar vacunas específicas para la ómicron. Las autoridades sanitarias han expresado el temor de que aumente el contagio el próximo invierno.

Arsen Arutiunian, un funcionario del instituto de salud Clalit, dijo que hubo una “gran demanda” del refuerzo desde que comenzó la campaña. Dijo que la clínica ha sido inundada por llamadas telefónicas de gente de todas las edades que pide turno para vacunarse.

“He recibido todas las vacunas anteriores. Hasta ahora, toco madera, no me he contagiado y toda mi familia ha sido Teflón”, dijo Eytan Gurfinkel, vecino de Tel Aviv.

El jueves había 95 personas hospitalizadas con casos graves de coronavirus, la cifra menor desde mayo. Más de 11.600 israelíes han muerto de COVID-19 desde el inicio de la pandemia a principios de 2020, según estadísticas del Ministerio de Salud.
