Billie Jean King, leyenda del tenis y activista en defensa de los derechos LGBTQ, recibió el viernes el mayor honor civil de Francia, la Legión de Honor.

King, quien se encuentra en Francia para la conclusión del Abierto de Francia, recibió el premio en reconocimiento a sus contribuciones al deporte femenino, la igualdad de género y los derechos de las personas LGBTQ en los deportes. Participó en una breve ceremonia en el Palacio del Elíseo, sede presidencial, a invitación del presidente francés Emmanuel Macron.

La exjugadora estadounidense de 78 años regresó a la cancha principal de arcilla de Roland Garros, el complejo de tenis de París que alberga el Abierto de Francia, para una ceremonia que celebra el 50mo aniversario de su conquista del título del torneo en 1972.

Un año antes, King puso en riesgo su carrera deportiva para ayudar a iniciar el Virginia Slims Tour para jugadoras profesionales. Eso condujo a la creación de la Asociación de Tenis Femenino (WTA, por sus siglas en inglés) en 1973 como organismo organizador del tenis profesional de mujeres.
