Incautan $3.600 millones en bitcoin a pareja de Nueva York acusada de hackear Bitfinex

El Departamento de Justicia incautó 94,000 bitcoins a una pareja de Nueva York acusada del hackeo masivo en 2016 de la casa de cambio online de criptomonedas Bitfinex.

Con un valor de US$71 millones en el momento en que fue robado, los bitcoin recuperados estaban valorados en más de US$3,6 mil millones, o US$43.400 por bitcoin, en el momento en que los presuntos hackers Ilya Lichtenstein, de 34 años, y su esposa, Heather Morgan, de 31, fueron arrestados el martes.

Un total de 119.754 bitcoins, con un valor actual de US$4.500 millones, fueron robados de Bitfinex después de que un hacker violara la seguridad de sus sistemas y llevara a cabo más de 2.000 transacciones sin autorización, según documentos judiciales.

De ellos, los fiscales alegan que alrededor de 25.000 fueron transferidos de la billetera de Lichtenstein a través de un “laberinto” de transacciones de lavado durante los últimos cinco años. Algunos de los fondos robados terminaron en cuentas financieras controladas por la pareja de marido y mujer, dijeron los fiscales.

La fiscal general adjunta, Lisa O Monaco, dijo que la incautación financiera más grande jamás llevada a cabo por el Departamento mostró que las criptomonedas no son un "refugio seguro" para los delincuentes.

“En un esfuerzo inútil por mantener el anonimato digital, los acusados lavaron fondos robados a través de un laberinto de transacciones con criptomonedas”, dijo.

Se espera que comparezcan en la corte de Manhattan el martes por la tarde.
