Dos aviones chocaron en el aire en un aeropuerto de California causando "múltiples muertes", según las autoridades.

El accidente tuvo lugar la tarde del jueves en el Aeropuerto Municipal de Watsonville en Watsonville, California, que es un área agrícola a 50 millas al sur de San José, dicen las autoridades.

Ambos aviones intentaban aterrizar cuando chocaron, según los informes.

“Múltiples agencias respondieron al Aeropuerto Municipal de Watsonville después de que dos aviones que intentaban aterrizar chocaran. Tenemos informes de múltiples muertes”, declaró la cuenta de Twitter de la ciudad de Watsonville.

La ciudad agregó que una “investigación está en marcha”.

La Administración Federal de Aviación dice que un Cessna 152 de un solo motor y un Cessna 340 de dos motores “colisionaron mientras los pilotos estaban en sus aproximaciones finales”.

Las autoridades dicen que una persona estaba a bordo del Cessna 152 y dos estaban en el Cessna 340, pero no aclararon sus condiciones.

La FAA dijo que nadie en tierra resultó herido.

Tanto la FAA como la Junta Nacional de Seguridad en el Transporte han iniciado investigaciones sobre el accidente.
