Alexander Zverev, el subcampeón del Abierto de Estados Unidos de 2020, se perderá la edición del torneo que arranca el próximo lunes al seguir recuperándose de una cirugía en el tobillo derecho.

Zverev sufrió desgarros de ligamentos en el tobillo durante el partido contra Rafael Nadal por las semifinales del Abierto de Francia en junio. El número 2 del mundo confirmó el lunes su baja del US Open.

El alemán de 25 años rozó la conquista de su primer título de Grand Slam hace dos años en Flushing Meadows pero Dominic Thiem remontó para vencerle en un desempate en el quinto set.

Fue la primera vez que un hombre revirtió un déficit 2-0 en la final del torneo desde que Pancho González lo logró ante Ted Schroeder en 1949.

Zverev se adjudicó la medalla olímpica de oro en Tokio el pasado y luego alcanzó las semifinales del US Open, sucumbiendo ante Novak Djokovic en cinco sets.

El estadounidense Stefan Kozlov accedió al cuadro principal del último Grand Slam de la temporada.
