Jaylen Waddle consiguió una recepción de touchdown e impuso un récord de la NFL de más pases atrapados para un novato, Duke Johnson corrió para 117 yardas y los Dolphins de Miami concluyeron su campaña el domingo con una victoria 33-25 sobre los Patriots de Nueva Inglaterra que estarán en postemporada.

Xavien Howard devolvió una intercepción para touchdown y Johnson anotó en un acarreo por Miami (9-8), que terminó con marca ganadora por segunda campaña consecutiva, aunque nuevamente se quedó fuera de la postemporada.

Brandon Bolden tuvo dos touchdowns — uno por tierra y otro por recepción — por los Patriots, que se enfilan a la postemporada como equipo comodín. Sin embargo, fueron barridos por lo Dolphins por primera vez desde 2000 y el resultado le otorgó el título del Este de la AFC a los Bills de Buffalo, que igualmente lo habrían obtenido con su triunfo sobre los Jets.

Nueva Inglaterra necesitaba de un triunfo sobre Miami para aspirar al título divisional. Los Patriots ya han estado en la ronda de comodines bajo la tutela del entrenador Bill Belichick — pero nunca como el equipo comodín. Las últimas 17 apariciones previas del equipo en postemporada con Belichick al frente habían sido como campeones divisionales.
