Dos represas se rompieron el domingo en el noreste de Brasil amenazando con agravar las inundaciones en una zona donde miles de personas han tenido que abandonar sus viviendas debido a torrenciales aguaceros.

Los gobiernos municipales de Jussiape e Itambe publicaron mensajes en redes sociales exhortando a la población a huir a zonas seguras.

“Una represa con alto volumen de agua se ha roto y se pronostica que en breve habrá una inundación repentina en la municipalidad de Itambe. Todos los habitantes deben evacuar las márgenes del río Verruga inmediatamente”, dice el mensaje colocado en Instagram

El departamento de prensa del gobierno del estado de Bahia informó que inundaciones causadas por lluvias han dejado 18 muertos y han afectado a 72 ciudades desde noviembre, obligando a más de 4.000 personas a salir de sus viviendas y dificultando el acceso a algunas comunidades.

“En este momento estamos actuando para salvar a gente, para rescatar a gente de los techos de sus casas por medio de botes”, declaró el gobernador de Bahía, Rui Costa, en una visita el domingo a la zona afectada. Indicó que las autoridades están tratando de repartir alimentos, colchones y ropa entre la población.
