Rich Strike apretó junto a la valla y superó a los punteros en los últimos instantes para dar una sorpresa mayúscula el sábado en el Derby de Kentucky.

Montado por el jockey venezolano Sonny León y con pronósticos de apenas 80-1 para llevarse la carrera, Rich Strike remontó posiciones desde muy atrás entre los 20 potros competidores.

Rebasó a Epicenter, favorito por 4-1 y a Zandon, para llegar primero a la meta de Churchill Downs.

Rich Strike no estaba siquiera en la lista de participantes hasta el viernes, cuando Ethereal Road fue retirado, lo que abrió una vacante para el potro entrenado por Eric Reed.

Tanto León como Reed participaban en su primer Derby.
