Early Voting soportó la acometida del favorito Epicenter y conquistó el sábado la carrera Preakness Stakes, con lo que validó la decisión de no competir en el Derby de Kentucky y concentrarse en la segunda carrera de la Triple Corona.

Montado por el boricua José Ortiz y tras marchar detrás de los punteros durante buena parte de la carrera, Early Voting se colocó adelante cerca de la curva final. Finalizó con una ventaja de cuerpo y medio respecto de Epicenter, que se resignó con el segundo sitio, tal como ocurrió en el Derby.

Preakness no contó con la participación de Rich Strike, ganador del Derby, cuyo propietario priorizó el descanso adicional sobre la posibilidad de conquistar la Triple Corona.

Early Voting, que comenzó con pronósticos de 5-1 para la carrera, dio al entrenador Chad Brown su segunda victoria en Preakness. Es también propiedad de los Establos Klarabich, que ganaron la carrera en 2017 con Cloud Computing.

Ortiz ganó Preakness por primera vez. Jamás había terminado por encima del cuarto sitio, en cuatro participaciones previas en esta competencia.
