Medvedev recibe boleto de comodín para Ginebra tras cirugía

Daniil Medvedev, campeón del U.S. Open, regresará de una cirugía de hernia para jugar en el Abierto de Ginebra después de recibir un boleto de comodín de parte de los organizadores del torneo el viernes.

El ruso, segunda raqueta del mundo, utilizará el evento en canchas de arcilla que se realizará del 14 al 21 de mayo, como parte de su preparación para el Abierto de Francia. El torneo en Roland Garros inicia el 22 de mayo.

Durante su ausencia por lesión, Medvedev y todos los demás jugadores de Rusia y Bielorrusia fueron excluidos de Wimbledon por los organizadores del torneo Grand Slam que en juega en césped. La decisión citó la “agresión militar injustificada y sin precedentes” de ambos países contra Ucrania.

Medvedev ocupó el máximo puesto del ranking mundial en febrero y marzo, convirtiéndose en el primer jugador además de Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic o Andy Murray en estar en la cima en los últimos 18 años.

Dominic Thiem y el campeón defensor Casper Ruud también jugarán en el torneo en Ginebra.
