Italia tendrá que volver a pasar por el martirio de los repechajes para acceder a la Copa Mundial.

Suiza e Inglaterra viajarán sin escalas a Qatar.

Al empatar el lunes 0-0 en Irlanda del Norte Italia — que se proclamó campeona de Europa hace cuatro meses — tuvo que conformarse con el segundo puesto de su grupo de las eliminatorias al quedar detrás de Suiza, que derrotó 4-0 a Bulgaria

Los Azzurri tampoco pudieron avanzar de forma automática al Mundial de Rusia 2018 y cayeron ante Suecia en una repesca a ida y vuelta, marcando uno de los momentos más aciagos del fútbol italiano.

Esta vez deberán sortear un inhóspito filtro de dos cruces a un solo partido. El sorteo de los repechajes será el 26 de noviembre e Italia será local en el primer partido por ser cabeza de serie.

Inglaterra precisó de un punto para asegurarse el primer lugar de su grupo y lo hizo a lo grande, aplastando 10-0 a San Marino. Fue el triunfo más abultado de los ingleses en un partido oficial.

Escocia será cabeza de serie, al igual que Italia, tras vencer 2-0 a Dinamarca, primero del Grupo F y cuyo paso perfecto en las eliminatorias fue roto en la última fecha.

Polonia se apoderó del segundo lugar en el grupo de Inglaterra al cerrar con una derrota 2-1 ante Hungría y probablemente será visitante en el primer turno de los repechajes.
