Invitan a líder de Tigray a negociaciones de paz con Etiopía

El líder de la convulsa región etíope de Tigray ha sido invitado a conversaciones de paz en Sudáfrica este fin de semana, dentro de un esfuerzo panafricano para poner fin a una de las guerras más olvidadas del mundo, según una carta a la que tuvo acceso The Associated Press.

Si Debretsion Gebremichael asiste a las conversaciones propuestas entre el bando de Tigray y el etíope, será la iniciativa de mayor nivel hasta ahora para poner fin a los dos años de guerra, que se han cobrado miles de vidas por violencia y hambre.

La carta del presidente de la Comisión de la Unión Africana indicó que las conversaciones auspiciadas por la UA pretenden “sentar las bases para una mediación continuada” entre las dos partes con vistas a una “resolución duradera del conflicto”.

No fue posible contactar en un primer momento con el portavoz de las fuerzas de Tigray, Getachew Reda. La vocera del primer ministro etíope, Abiy Ahmed, no respondió de inmediato a preguntas sobre el tema.

La misiva indicaba que las conversaciones estarían coordinadas por el enviado especial de la UE y expresidente de Nigeria Olesegun Obasanjo, con el apoyo del expresidente de Kenia Uhuru Kenyatta y el ex vicepresidente de Sudáfrica Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
