Brendan Donovan logró un grand slam en la séptima entrada, para ayudar a que Albert Pujols y los Cardenales de San Luis superaran el jueves 5-4 a los Padres de San Diego, con lo que los líderes de la Central de la Liga Nacional cortaron una seguidilla de tres derrotas.

El dominicano Pujols permaneció en 698 jonrones de por vida, aunque conectó dos batazos profundos al jardín izquierdo, uno para un sencillo y otro para un out en la franja de advertencia.

La siguiente escala en su intento por unirse al club de los 700 vuelacercas será el Dodger Stadium, donde los Cardenales abren este viernes una serie de tres compromisos.

El dominicano Manny Machado llegó a 30 cuadrangulares con los Padres, que habían ganado cinco duelos en fila. San Diego controla actualmente el segundo de tres boletos de comodín disponibles para los playoffs.

El grand slam de Donovan dio el triunfo a Jack Flaherty (1-1), quien repartió nueve ponches en seis entradas, aceptó tres carreras —dos limpias—, permitió cuatro imparables y obsequió cuatro boletos.

El mexicano Giovanny Gallegos se encargó del noveno capítulo para aportar su 14to salvamento.

La derrota fue para Nick Martínez (4-4).
