Por segunda temporada consecutiva, más del 28% del total de los jugadores de Grandes Ligas provienen de un país que no es Estados Unidos.

Grandes Ligas informó el viernes que 275 de los 975 jugadores que en el primer día de la temporada regular aparecen en los planteles ampliados de 28 peloteros, las listas de lesionados, la lista restringida y la lista de licencias por fallecimiento de un familiar directo, nacieron fuera de los 50 estados.

El porcentaje fue de 28,2%, ligeramente por debajo de 28,3% del año pasado y del 28,4% de 2020, cuando el límite del plantel se expandió de 25 a 30 jugadores durante la pandemia de coronavirus antes de restablecerse en 26 el año pasado. El límite activo de esta temporada comienza en 28 antes de volver a 26 el 2 de mayo.

República Dominicana lideró con 99 peloteros, seguido por Venezuela con 67 y Cuba con 23. Le siguió Puerto Rico con 16, seguido por México (13), Canadá (12), Colombia (10), Japón (siete), Panamá (seis), Curazao (cinco), Corea del Sur (cuatro) y Bahamas (tres).

Aruba, Australia, Brasil, Alemania, Honduras, Países Bajos, Nicaragua, Taiwán y las Islas Vírgenes de Estados Unidos tienen uno cada uno.

Las 21 naciones y territorios empataron 2018 con el total más alto.
